How To: Become The Head Of Digital Marketing For Syco Music

We were lucky enough to get to chat to Genevieve Ampaduh, who works for Syco, all about how she got into the music industry, what her job is all about and the skills YOU need to be able to follow in her footsteps.

Alright, alright, we know – if you’re just getting started in the music industry, chances are you won’t be getting hired as a head of a department just yet. But when we sat down to talk to Syco’s (Simon Cowell’s record label, just FYI) Head of Digital Marketing, we found out exactly how she got HER big break which eventually led to her holding one of the most prestigious jobs the music industry has.

Picking her brain on all things music, Genevieve revealed that your dream job really isn’t as unattainable as it may seem.

She revealed: “I didn’t really intentionally try to get into the music industry, I actually started in TV and then moved on to computer games. Then, music seemed like a natural next progression in the entertainment industry.”

Head of Digital Marketing at Syco

“The Head of Digital Marketing is an all-encompasing role when it comes to digital. You’re looking after the artist strategy online, you’re looking after their campaigning, but you’re also helping them find their social media mojo – to be the best they possible can be on social media.”

And what does Genevieve think are the three most important skills needed to do her job?

1. Creativity

2. Thorough marketing process

3. Ability to empathise – “you really need to be able to put yourself in the shoes of your audience and see things from their point of view.”
