Job Summary

To be an active member of the theatre’s Sales & Marketing Department as a member of the Box Office team. To sell tickets and maximise sales by telephone, across the counter and through postal bookings for all events at the theatre. To sell or reserve additional facilities relating to a patron’s visit including merchandise, workshops, exhibitions, etc. To advise patrons about online booking. To be proactive in the smooth running of the Box Office, to ensure a positive experience for patrons and optimise profit for the Theatre. To be an effective and flexible member of the team and to be available for work during evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays.

Job Description


  • Carry out ticket sales duties using the theatre’s computerised booking system, conversing with the public in person and by telephone and ensuring constant attention to detail for a smooth and courteous transaction on all occasions
  • Be fully informed and proactive in the marketing of the Theatre’s products, services and facilities, looking to create sales opportunities whenever possible
  • Achieving team sales targets as directed by the Sales Manager
  • Participate in telephone sales campaigns as requested and to undertake any training required to assist effectiveness in this area
  • Capture and update patron data at point of purchase and enquiry

Reporting/Data Handling

  • Adhere to cash-handling procedures as determined by the finance department.
  • At the end of each shift, to account for personal takings and reconcile these with computerised reports
  • Keep confidential all financial information relating to The Grand and its sales
  • Ensure the confidentiality of all information relating to patron and staff data in compliance with the Data Protection Act.

Customer Service

  • Ensure that members of the public using the Box Office, whether in person or by telephone, are greeted in a welcoming, courteous and helpful manner
  • Proactive on the theatre’s behalf in customer care and public safety and comfort, ensuring that customer requirements are dealt with courteously and efficiently
  • Act as a point of reference for all enquiries concerning the activities of The Grand, including: performances, education activities and workshops, café-bar facilities, exhibitions, foyer events etc (in some cases off-site events)
  • Assist (when necessary) with incoming telephone enquiries to The Grand and act as a reception point for the public


  • Proactive in the marketing and coordination of facilities for patrons with disabilities, including Audio Described, Sign Language Interpreted, Wheelchair Access, and Captioned Performances
  • To implement and adhere to the provisions of the Disability Discrimination Act


  • Attend Box Office meetings and Marketing meetings as required
  • Assist in the smooth flow of information between all Box Office and other departments
  • Capture customer information in accordance with the provisions of the Data Protection Act
  • Implement and adhere to the provisions of the Data Protection Act
  • Assist the Marketing Department with tactical and display marketing when required
  • Attend (when needed) marketing events to promote or sell tickets


  • Report for work promptly according to the times laid down in the weekly schedule
  • Wear the uniform provided by the theatre and be presentable at all times.
  • Carry out any other duties as reasonably required by the Sales/Marketing Manager
  • Complete timesheets accurately, honestly and on time
  • Flexible in your hours of work as requested by the Sales Manager
  • Comply with theatre’s security, fire regulations and health and safety policies and legislation
  • Always act in the best interests of The Grand and comply with all theatre policies

Job Specification

  • GCSE English and Maths grade 4 (C) or above
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook etc) – Excellent keyboard skills
  • Previous sales experience
  • Experience in cash handling
  • Ability to work on own initiative
  • Previous box office / ticket sales experience
  • Be organised with great time keeping
  • Accurate
  • Ability to remain professional under pressure
  • Courteous and helpful telephone/counter manner – with a ‘can do’ attitude
  • Good team player
  • To be flexible and able to work evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays
