Where are They Now: Niklas and Elle

Capital XTRA’s Music Potential graduates Niklas and Elle stopped by to catch up.

Where are They Now: Niklas and Elle

Elle Chante graduated from Music Potential in 2015 and Niklas Somenou graduated in 2016. What’s more exciting is that they joined forces to release an amazing new single!

We caught up with the Music Potential graduates to discuss how they are getting on. Check this out:

Nik and Elle, thanks for joining us!

Thanks for having us!

We really like your new track ‘Faded’. It has a cool trap/electronic feel to it. What was the creative process behind it?

ELLE: The track was originally a snippet of another song, but I thought it had a nice sound and knew I could write something good over it.

NIKLAS: Yeah, it was a really quick process. I didn’t like the beat originally but when Elle added her lyrics to it, my opinion changed.

You already have over 70,000 views on YouTube, that’s amazing!

ELLE: Yeah, it’s crazy to think that so many people have listened to our song!

What inspired you guys to get into music to begin with?

NIKLAS: I got into music at 12 years old. My inspirations were Eminem and Dr. Dre. I was raised in Hamburg so got more into dubstep when I moved to the UK at 14.

ELLE: In my opinion, music is expression-based. Everything came from home for me. But when I look at artists, the way they present themselves and their character are what inspires me.

So, was it a particular track that sparked your interest?

NIKLAS: Yeah, ‘Lose Yourself’ by Eminem. It’s the soundtrack to my life! I used to walk around Germany with the piano part of the song playing in my head.

ELLE: ‘Retrograde’ by James Blake. I have a strong connection to it because of the way it touches listeners.

Nice. So, how did you both find out about Capital XTRA’s Music Potential?

NIKLAS: I was at a youth centre and a guy from Punch Records listened to some of my beats and recommended I join.

ELLE: An organisation called Beatfreeks introduced me actually.

Cool. How would you both say the programme benefited you?

NIKLAS: It’s definitely helped with my confidence and networking skills.

ELLE: For me, performing at KOKO as part of the programme helped develop my performance skills. Music Potential helped me find the type of music I wanted to create and I got a great mentor out of it.

Performing at KOKO must have been surreal!

ELLE: Haha, it really was!

So, aside from your new single, are there any other songs you guys are listening to?

ELLE: I’m listening to these electronic producers called Droeloe. I love them!

NIKLAS: I’ve listened to Eminem’s new album, Schoolboy Q’s ‘Blank Face’ LP, Jamie XX’s album ‘In Colour’ and ‘DAMN’ by Kendrick Lamar.

All complete bangers! What have you got planned for the future?

ELLE: I made my first music video and I’m planning to create an event that will be like stepping into another world visually. Can’t say much, but it should be good!

NIKLAS: I’m working on wrapping up a music project that I have been working on for quite a long time. My focus is on getting that through the pipeline.

Well, it all sounds very mysterious and exciting! Haha, we look forward to hearing more from you both!

ELLE and NIKLAS: Thanks, Big Music!
